Why would any person or organization want to kill a thousand bunnies? It may sound like a silly rhetorical question, but for the University of Victoria feral rabbit population, the question is literal and serious. With plans to expand the campus with new construction, the once-lauded bunnies of UVic have become an inconvenience to the University administration and they now face a deadline to either find a new home or be euthanized. Thankfully, the rabbits have a friend in Susan Vickery, director of the Earth Animal Humane Education and Rescue Society (EARS), a BC resident who has been coordinating fundraising efforts to build sanctuary space and relocate them. Susan provides us with a clear historical context of how the rabbits got to UVic in the first place, and also present timeline of the increasingly dire situation.
