Bringing Our Beliefs to the Dinner Table: Discussing Carnism with Melanie Joy

This week we speak with social psychologist and author of “Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows”, Dr. Melanie Joy.

On this show, we discuss “Carnism” – a term that Dr. Joy has coined for describing the belief system that allows for the seemingly paradoxical relationships we have with “edible” and “non edible” groups of animals. As well, we discuss some of the common defense mechanisms that carnists employ to defend their beliefs and some of the challenges of being veg(etari)an in a carnistic world.

Finally, we ask Dr. Joy to discuss the origins of this ideological belief system and how we might challenge or even overcome it.

This week’s news is from The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association
