In part 2 of our series on vegans in the fashion world, Animal Voices welcomes Joshua Katcher, blogger at The Discerning Brute and creator of the fashion line Brave GentleMan. “We tend to look at the fashion industry and write it off as frivolous,” says Katcher, and yet human demands for particular materials and low prices have enormous impacts on animals, workers, and the environment. From sweatshops to leather tanneries to the massive “live export” ships that take aging sheep to their deaths, much is hidden behind the price tag on a cheap t-shirt or leather purse.
In contrast, the suits, shoes, and hats in Katcher’s store are a showcase of new materials that are both low-impact and luxurious. Through his approach to business and his writings on masculinity and ethics, Katcher promotes a new ideal for the modern gentleman: thoughtful, informed, and devoted to using his strengths to better the world.
