First up, Hannah Lachnit tells us about the activities Marineland Animal Defense has planned for the summer. The group is pressuring Marineland, a tourist attraction in Niagara Falls, to place the animals currently there into sanctuaries and reinvent itself as a park without exploited captive animals.
Then, AV welcomes back Dylan Powell to talk about veganism in occupied territories. Having grown up on land that was illegally clawed back from the Six Nations, Powell has been involved in solidarity organizing for some years. The system of animal agriculture brought to the Americas 500 years ago is hungry for land — for grazing, for feedcrops — and its expansion is tied to land theft, displacement, and environmental destruction. Perhaps activists fighting this system might recognize as allies the Onkwehon:we (original people) activists fighting to protect remaining wild spaces against pipelines, fracking, and suburban sprawl? Powell certainly thinks so, and he argues persuasively for it in the essay we will discuss today.
